Like I was some kind of experiment. “You’ve got this mystery to you,” he continued. “Half-wolf, right? I’ve always wondered what that’s like.” I took a cautious step back. “What what’s like?” He smiled, and it made my skin crawl. “Being with someone like you. Half human. Half something else. It’s…exotic.” That’s when the last shred of hope shattered. “You don’t actually like me,” I said, my tone filled with disappointment.

I looked at each of them slowly. “What if I told you there was another way?” The youngest blinked. “What way?” “Leave.” They stared at me like I’d just suggested flying. “You’re joking,” one of the others said. “I’m not.” I leaned forward slightly. “Join us.” The tallest wolf narrowed his eyes. “Us?” “We have wolves,” I said. “And vampires.” That got their full attention. “Vampires?” the seventeen-year-old blurted. “You’re fighting with vampires?”

“That is why he decided to break the mate bond and run away with the vampire.” He paused briefly, studying my face. “But fate can be cruel,” he added. “On the night they planned to escape, the vampire went into labor. On a freezing winter night, deep in the forest, a baby was born. A baby who was half vampire and half werewolf.” My heartbeat thundered loudly in my ears. “But the woman did not survive,” he continued. “The baby was too powerful, and her body could not withstand childbirth. "If I have time to think about that, I’d rather spend it getting Bam’s attention. Do they know not everyone can be Yance or Lance?" Geri said seriously while reading the newspaper.
