And – to make matters even worse – she’d told Kathrena to come as a vampire. I, however, was dressed in a cheerleading outfit – stolen from the Aspen High cheer team, in the school colours of blue and yellow – which had been doused with fake blood. I was wearing a lot of makeup to make me look undead, which I found terribly amusing. I usually went to such lengths to avoid looking like someone who’d died, yet there I’d been, smudging dark purple eye shadow into the hollows beneath my eyes.

Did someone leave a tap on in one of the bathrooms? Is that why I was called home? To clean?? I hold my phone down to see the wetness. My breath hitches and my heart skips a beat at the sight. No. It’s not water. And the liquid is definitely not colourless. It is deep red. My stomach wrenches when I catch the scent of a familiar smell, pungent in the air. Metal. It’s so concentrated that it’s choking. I feel my heart skip a beat as I keep moving up. The path becomes more painted with this red liquid the further I go up. “This is not funny mom, it’s not April fools and this is not Halloween so stop joking now.” I say, warily moving up.

I whispered as William killed the engine. “So did I,” he muttered. “That was mistake number one.” Haley hopped out before either of us could question her and climbed onto a hay bale like she was about to lead a revolution. She whipped out her phone and held it to her mouth like a microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen!” She called out dramatically to no one in particular, except maybe a confused pigeon “Welcome to the first ever Stone Family Pre-Halloween Scavenger Showdown!” William blinked up at her. “That’s not a thing.”

~~ Dahlia ~~ The second I slammed my hotel room door shut, I bolted straight for the bathroom like a woman possessed. Not for the toilet, not for the shower… no. For the sink. I snatched my toothbrush like it was a weapon, slapped toothpaste on it like I was squeezing venom from a snake, and shoved it in my mouth. Scrub. Scrub. Scrub. “Oh my God, oh my GOD,” I garbled around foamy bubbles, staring at my own reflection like I was in a horror movie. “I’ve been assaulted. My lips have been… contaminated. I need bleach.“

It was Dawn and that day was the day of the Halloween festival. It was quite a busy night for Raven and her friends as they had lots of fun in the woods the night before. All of them made their way back into town as early as 6 am and by that time they could already see that the preparations for the Halloween festival was already on the way by the store keepers and they were all very serious and intentional about it with the pumpkins, decorations, lights and everything needed to actually make the night a pretty scary one.

I needed an assistant, and I knew Hunter would be all too happy that it was someone from his pack. But before I could offer her anything, I had to speak to him first. We found the box of decorations and Miss Sally’s old lab skeleton she kept around specifically for Halloween and dragged it all out to the front of the store. We waved at the people walking by as we set up and started to build the window scene. It was nice to have the company to help me and by the time we were done and stood back to look at our creation I was feeling happy.

"You have to come! We are going to a party with Blake and his basketball buddies, so it's a totally different crowd than the one Drayden will probably be out with. Besides, Mason and Blake won't let him get near you even if he tries." She furrowed her brows as if contemplating everything I just said. "You sure?" I nodded. "100%. I already talked to them. And about the costume... well, let's just say it's a good thing you have the best roommate ever." Her smile returned, "Oh yeah? Why is that?" I pushed myself off her bed, rubbing back over to my closet, "Because I got you this!" ******** "To Halloween!" I cheered, raising my shot glass. Hannah and Blake clinked their glasses with mine before

I watched it closely. For a second, nothing happened. I waited. Then, the liquid began to soak into the fibers. Right before my eyes, the deep black of my shirt began to change. It didn't just get wet. It started to fade. The black turned to a sickly, burnt orange. And then, gradually but fast, it turned to a pale, ghostly white. This was the same. The exact tea that had poured on me that day. The bleaching tea. What is inside this?

Shaking my head, I headed down to Rebecca’s car. Now back with her bag, I placed it next to her. She takes out a vile and gives it to me. “I do not know what it is, but there is a blue aura around you like that hid thing and it gives out black magic that is not good. This will help till I can help you but Hailey comes first now. She is very badly hurt and not treated now she will die” She takes out some sort of cream and starts to rub it on the whip marks, it has a foul smell and I held my hand to my nose and mouth.

She did not go to her room neither did she remove her coat or gloves. Instead, she turned left. The kitchen doors swung open, and the smell hit her instantly. A strong smell of bleach. It was sharp, overpowering and invasive. The kind of bleach that was used to try and cover up something bad. It stung her eyes and coated the back of her throat. Beneath it lingered something older and fouler: fear soaked into stone, sweat ground into grout, desperation clinging to every surface. Stainless steel counters gleamed too brightly, scrubbed to a manic shine. The floor was damp, streaked where mops had dragged back and forth too many times. Buckets were shoved hastily into corners, rags folded with t
