I ran as fast as I could toward the railing where he had been sitting just a second ago and looked down into the dark garden below. It was a mistake I instantly regretted. I braced myself to see a broken, bloody body lying motionless on the grass… but there was nothing there. No body, no blood, no sign of injury.
But there was something else.
Lying there on the grass, illuminated by the faint moonlight, was a pair of enormous, black wings. They were silky, beautiful, and terrifyingly magnificent, spread out as if they had just been folded away.
