Her tears come harder now, her body trembling as she clutches Milanya close. I reach for her, pulling her into my arms, and she collapses against me, her sobs shaking her entire frame.
“I’m sorry,” I murmur, my hand running up and down her back. “I’m so fucking sorry, Katya. This never should’ve happened. I should’ve seen it coming. I should’ve protected you better.”
Her voice is muffled against my chest, broken and raw. “It’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known. And you did protect us, Ruslan.”
