I tipped my head to the side, watching the onyx-colored snakes, their eyes black as night, slither up Kimberly’s body. Their bodies coiled around her arms and legs, fangs sinking in deep. She let out a low, pained moan. I closed the final feet of distance between us, so eager to try out my plan that I could feel my magic quivering. Before I could grab her arm and inspect the dark spell mark myself, a grating voice sounded several feet from behind.

He was no coward, however, and used a pair of kitchen tongs to pick up the snake, throw it in a basket, and fling it outside. As it slithered past Frank and Hana, the latter exclaimed, "Whoa, where did that come from?" The bar owner pointed at the back. "It slithered into the freezer. I didn't speak immediately; let them remember those snakes. "They.... they weren't normal," Henrick mumbled, and I smiled.

I lunged to grab his finger, but the little snake was too fast for me. I ended up chasing him outside while Dad called out for us to be careful, but as soon as I crossed the threshold, I acted all cool, my eyes immediately going next door.

Fyn hugged his knees to his chest, "A talking snake." "That is right," The snake's voice echoed inside his mind again. "You do not seem surprised." "I'm captured by a demon," Fyn pointed out. "I think nothing is more surprising than that."
