CHAPTER NINE “Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Touching the piece of glass in front of her, Valentina couldn't remember the last time she looked at herself in the mirror. She could not tell if she still recognized the person looking back at her from the looking-glass. After dressing up and applying make up, she tried to look back again in the mirror. However, whenever she tried to smile at her reflection: the smile would not reach her cloudy hazel eyes, for she could not even recognize the woman in front of her.

The waist-high full-length mirror wobbled for quite a while, capturing the reflection of Candice in its unsteady gaze. The mirror reflected her pale face, a slender neck, and clothes that used to fit well but now appeared loose on her. Candice stared at the seemingly lifeless woman in the mirror, shocked. Her pupils trembled uncontrollably, and she instinctively reached out to touch the reflection in the mirror. Was this really her? Why did she look so terrible? She didn’t feel sick, but she looked awful. Candice stood in front of the mirror for a long time, trying to understand her current appearance and the reasons behind the change.

In order to find what it was, she casted a spell over it and the second instant, the little green pot in her hands changed to a large sized pot, while everything else over it also got magnified. Moving the pot, she stopped over the spot where the carving was. Touching it again, she came to know that the slimy and slippery thing was rushing out of the carving, which looked like a SNAKE! Spotting a snake carving, and the emitted slimy liquid oozing out from it, she was even more confused, and scrunched her eyebrows.

I stopped walking and almost shrieked when the vines of the roses in the hedge I touched turned to snakes. Eyes widening, I stepped back. A flicker of light blinded me for a moment before I noticed the mirror in front of me, in between the hedges filled with snakes. Though it looked like a huge mirror, it didn’t have my reflection when I was standing a few feet away. Instead, it had an image… no, an image didn’t suppose to be moving but this one seemed to be alive. It was staring at me. It looked like an animal but I wasn’t sure what it was.

Quirrell then ordered the boy to look at the mirror. Mr. Potter then stood in front of the mirror and Erik paused again. He quickly positioned himself behind the boy and 'unpaused' the memory. He watched as the boy's reflection took a red ruby-like stone from its pants' pocket, showed it to him, gave him a wink and put the stone back in the pocket. Mr. Potter then, as sneaky as an elephant in a china store could be, checked his pocket and noticed the bulge in it. But the stupid professor didn't seem to notice.

Harriet suggested. I couldn't help but let out a sigh. "Harriet, that mirror only answers questions like, 'Who is the fairest of them all?'" I replied, facepalming at the suggestion. Karina, always the book nerd, chimed in with another idea. "What about the magical bug? I read about it in one of the royal manuals. It says we should place it in front of the Living Mirror with the accuser, and the bug will reveal the truth."

I thought I looked good in the mirror, the best I've looked for weeks due to him! He runs back down the stairs holding a black box in his hands, it looked big enough to hold a necklace or a watch maybe. He opens it to reveal a necklace in the shape of a heart, from where I was standing it looked like the heart had diamonds going around the edges. That wouldn't have been cheap, hopefully, it hasn't come off a dead person, wow dark Freya. "You look incredible, this necklace will just tie it all together" he smiles taking it out of the box instructing me to turn around, I do as I'm told while he puts the necklace around my neck clasping it.

My fingers tingled. The stairs ended in a wide underground chamber. Lit by glowing orbs floating above black marble. The walls were carved with runes. Shelves lined with scrolls. Vials. Bones. Ancient spellbooks. And in the center? A mirror. Not just any mirror. It shimmered like water. Swirled like smoke. I stepped closer, eyes narrowing—until suddenly, the mirror flared with light, and a vision appeared. Golden wings. Burning eyes. A man screaming in rage. My breath caught.

The shadows shied away, hissing like burning steam and then came the silence. Serena stood. Mirage shimmered in the centre of the stone circle. A mirror formed. But it didn’t show her. It depicted twelve wolves, standing high on a ridge of black rock, howling into the wind. One of them is standing in the middle — silver-eyed, fire beneath her pelt. Serakha. The mirror cracked. A line down the center. And up came Serena’s reflection. Changed. Eyes like moonlight and hair dusted with silver at the tips. The forest’s voice came back — low, ancient, gentle.

The hug was short and brief but it gave Akira the strength she needed to push just a little bit further. They walked around till Orion paused at the fantasy section of the library, the children's section to be precise. “Eureka!” He exclaimed. Akira chuckled at his childlike expression, “what are we doing here?” “Does this look familiar?” He asked. She looked closely at the book and smiled, “Harry Potter?” She asked in surprise. “Yes my darling, I believe that there's a creature in this book that might have a hand in Mirabel's petrification.” Akira scoffed, “I doubt the basilisk would want to have anything to do with her.”
