In the far corner is a sink and a crude-looking toilet. Hooks line one of the walls, all empty. The air smells like rust and dust. But then, something catches my eye. A shelf near the back, almost hidden in shadow. Not plastic packages this time. Books. Old ones. Their spines are worn, leather cracked. Some have gold filigree. Others are thick and bound in cloth. Most of the books were more ledgers than anything, records of the pack’s history, but there was small section of classic books, some of which appeared to be first editions. Feeling a little excited over the prospect I searched the title, looking at the familiar names, the literary classics, before stopping on a title I had never heard of by an author I didn’t know. I was a big reader I always had been, so it was rare for me to come across an old book that held no recognition whatsoever. She smiled and took the hands of the man back into the cover before covering him up to his belly with the spread. Scott was in discomfort having someone's hands roaming all over his body. Plus it was not just anyone's hands, it was that of a woman and the woman was also a human; the creatures he hated the most. I stood at the kitchen window with the tea and looked at the garden where the March light was doing its early spring thing, the specific quality of light that was returning to the world after the low months, longer and more direct each day, the light that arrived before the warmth and was the announcement of the warmth coming. I get dressed in the clothes that Alice has picked out for me and make myself presentable in the bathroom before following her to the library. Alice opens the heavy wooden door to the library. Inside, at one of the desks, sits a skinny man with balding brown hair. He’s hunched over a book and doesn’t seem to notice at first as I approach, but as I come closer he suddenly speaks. “Good morning,” he says, turning the page in his book. I look down to see that the book is open to an illustrated page that depicts a Bear and a Swan fighting. The top of the page reads ‘The Final Summit’.
