Thick, choking smoke, not from hearth fires but from timbers, stone dust hanging in the air, churned into a fine grit by too many desperate paws. Blood. Fear-sweat. Sound followed. Howls. Dozens of them. Not the rolling chorus of a pack greeting the moon. Sharp. Fractured.

The dripping blood begins to bubble faintly, then slithers across the parchment like an independent, living entity. Slowly, deliberately, it snakes through illustrated mountain passes, deep valleys, and winding rivers before halting abruptly somewhere deep within the jagged northern mountain range, a remote, forgotten place where even the map’s original ink fades from age and obscurity.

I looked at the three of them—my pack, my shields, my family. The fire burned brightly, casting warmth across the hidden chamber. Outside, the wind howled, and the Council's hunters searched in vain. Security hauled groaning Rourke, chopper thrum vibrating walls distant. Night air whipped savage as rotors clawed sky, Kenji carrying me aboard a black Hawk sleek, Manhattan's veins blurring below. His arms steel bands, scent smoky citrus cutting blood tang, obsidian eyes locked mine unblinking. "Mine," he murmured, gravel velvet promise amid engine roar. Penthouse lights swelled beacon, empire's crown awaiting.

Of all the clichés! I groaned and transformed again. I made my way out of the forest and back to where I stored my clothes. I couldn’t hunt with the injuries I’d sustained. The animals would smell me coming from a mile away. Plus, with the way my wolf was mourning, I didn’t think she would be up to it. So that was it, my dream had ended before it even began.
