Her fingers slide over smooth, unmarked flesh. The devastation on her face is absolute. Her jaw drops open, but no sound comes out this time. A sudden, sharp pain strikes me directly in the centre of my chest. It feels as if a heavy iron fist has closed around my heart and squeezed until the vessels burst. I drop to my knees, gasping for oxygen, my palms flat against the dirt. A few feet away, Mitchell stumbles, his knees hitting the grass with a heavy thud as he clutches his own ribs.

My chest feels like someone just reached in and squeezed my heart before ripping it out. I remember holding him in my lap as he coughed up blood everywhere. The knife sticking out of his chest. I remember his last breath as I screamed. My chest heaves as I begin to cry. I quickly yanked the IV out of my hand and grabbed a hold of the tube in my mouth. I squeeze my eyes closed tight and yank it. I quickly sit up coughing for a moment. I look at my shaky hands as tears stream down my face. I feel my face contort as I close my eyes tight. I take a deep breath and scream at the top of my lungs as I lean forward.

Sitting there, on the floor of her chamber, she experienced the tearing pain that spread through her chest, permeating her entire being. She wondered how many times a heart could be broken and still continue to beat. The pieces to which her heart had been shattered were so numerous that it became impossible to gather all the shards, each fragment being a painful memory.
