I’d been staring at the back of my hand for nearly ten minutes, willing myself to stay calm, to not panic.
Because right there, beneath my skin, something shimmered.
It started as a prickle, almost like static electricity. Then, like light bending, the faintest pattern rippled across the surface. Iridescent scales flickered into existence, catching the dim light of my lamp before fading again.
I gasped, jerking my hand back like it had betrayed me. My chest rose and fell quickly, heart thudding as I stared at my own skin.
