Jake wiped his hands on his jeans as he stood on the front porch of the Millers’ house, toolbox in one hand and a cold beer in the other. It was a quiet evening, he’d lived next door for six years, watching the Millers move in, throw block parties, and settle into the comfortable rhythm of married life. Tom Miller was a decent guy but Tom was gone again on another business trip, and his wife, Lisa, had texted Jake earlier that afternoon in a mild panic.

He is always preferred life in the fast lane.” She shot Jake a teasing look. “I guess you are merging into the carpool lane, huh?”

The sound echoed through the room, a raw, physical manifestation of his rage. “Damn it!” he roared. “How many more lives will this bastard take?” I moved closer, laying a hand on his arm. “Jake, we need to stay calm. This is what he wants. He wants us to react, to lose control.” Jake took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment before nodding. “You’re right,” he said, his voice a strained whisper. “But I can’t just stand by and let this happen.” “We won’t,” I assured him. “We need a plan. And we need to find out who’s been talking to Andrew.”

You two look so much alike.” As I blinked in surprise, I felt Andreas tense beside me, his expression darkening. “Do you know him?” he asked, his voice low, edged with irritation. “Yeah,” I replied quickly, feigning a smile. “Jake and I went to college together.” Jake glanced at Andreas, recognition sparking in his eyes. “Wait a second. You’re Andreas Thorne, right? Ashton’s husband?”

She sat down beside her father to have breakfast. Her mother served them breakfast. Emma switched on the tv to watch while eating. The news channel was playing. Emma started reading the headlines as she moved the spoonful of pancake inside her mouth. Walter Anderson's son Jake Anderson got into an accident last night, the doctors said he was in a critical condition! Her mind read the headline and the spoon fell from her hand making a clicking sound. Her hands started shaking and her eyes weren’t even blinking, they were stuck at the headlines.
