As I lean over her, brushing her dark hair back from her sweaty forehead, a sharp, bitter scent cuts through the mountain air. It is faint—masked by the pine and the cold dirt—but it hits my wolf’s senses like a whip.
Hellebore. Mountain ash.
And beneath it, another scent lingering right near the bushes beside the terrace wall. A sharp, sour stench of frantic panic.
