CH 52 Staff Apologies POV: Elena / Alexander / Julian Later that day, the Hartwell mansion was alive in a way it hadn’t been for years. The corridors, usually quiet and formal, now buzzed with a gentle tension. Staff members moved with purpose, their eyes darting toward the grand main hall, whispering softly among themselves. The chandeliers scattered the late afternoon sunlight across the marble floors, giving the hall a warm glow that softened the usual strict atmosphere of the house.

Torches gutter along the corridor, their flames bending sideways as if afraid to stand upright. I step into the great hall alone. The floor is cracked now, split down the center like a wound that never healed. The mirrors lining the walls are shattered, their fragments twitching faintly as if something trapped inside is still trying to crawl out. At the far end of the hall, the shadows gather, and then he steps forward. The Herald is no longer pretending to be human.

It was Hex. Linux' mind went blank at that moment, and he felt all the blood in his body rush to his head. He looked over at the surveillance footage of the living room and noticed that Hilda, who was sleeping on the sofa just before, had disappeared. All that was left behind was her army coat on the ground. The person Hex attacked was Hilda! Not Nathan! Yet, he put them together in the same space! An overwhelming fear washed over him. He immediately went to check on the surveillance footage and saw two dogs barking uncontrollably as they ran up to a guest room on the second floor. Talen looked at his blonde mate. “The hotels are all in the same area,” Heath replied. “It won’t be hard to work out which one – just look for the Van Helsing activity.” They all paused as the door opened and Tyler, Talen’s blood slave and a vampire entered and looked around, taking in the witches, Connery and Meguitte, Harry and Jules, the Point Crest Triquetra, before finishing on Talen and the Triquetra. “Hey, you found them, Talen?” Tyler’s smile was wide revealing bloodied teeth.

“A doorway. Nothing more.” My breath catches. Because for the first time, I see it. This isn’t Brad. Not anymore. This is something else. Something wearing him. Something using him. Something that tricked me. My voice comes out small. “What… what are you?” He steps close enough that the shadows brush my skin like cold fingers. “I am the Hallow,” he whispers. “And you, Jason, are a pawn who mistook himself for a king.” My blood runs cold.
