She glanced back to see her parents fighting valiantly, their magic clashing with the dark energy of their attackers. My body screamed in protest, but I moved, forcing my right hand to half-shift into a claw. Before Darius could recover, I raised my hand and drove my claws into his exposed belly, sinking deep into his flesh. His howl of agony cut through the air, his eyes wide with shock as blood spilled down his torso.

I say hoarsely. Dax glances back at me, eyes clear for the first time since Nyxara took him. “You already saved me,” he says softly. “Now save him.” The ground shakes violently, and the fight explodes. Dax launches forward with a roar, slamming into the nightmares with brutal force. Shadow and blood and screaming bodies collide in a violent tangle. He moves like a man who knows this is his last stand, and doesn’t regret it. Nyxara watches with delighted fascination.
