A taunts me. “Yes, sir.” He says in a military voice, “The mission is to find the worthless escapees and bring them home. We do whatever it takes. That involves killing civilians. “ A nods, reaching into his pocket, and throws a literal milk bone at him, “That’s right. Maybe 1005 should learn from you.” He smiles at me and looks around the SUV, “Hey, Z, how about 1005 and 2010 ride together for a while?”

I walked in with a smile. “Good afternoon Chief” I greeted as I took a seat. He creased his brows as soon as he saw me. “Aren't you supposed to be in the middle east?” He asked with suspicion in his voice. “Well yeah - for the most part. This is part of the mission” I responded. The man stared at me like it was supposed to be a staring contest. “What? You don't trust me? Don't forget I hold the record for the most successful missions by a large margin. I know exactly what I'm doing” I assured him.

“Or you’ll be dead. Who knows?” “Let’s get a demon to hunt. The board was updated today. There might be something good. We should go before all the decent jobs are taken.” “I have a mission for us. Picked it up earlier,” he says, crossing his arms. “How did you have time for that? You literally just woke up.” I gesture at him. “I watched you leave your room, eat half the kitchen, and shower. There’s no way you went to the board.” “The mission board doesn’t have this one,” he replies. “It's level three. I heard about it at the bar last night. We’re going for leaderboard points.”

My words were caught in my throat, from his soul-boring gaze, which made me feel exposed and vulnerable. He continued, his voice dripping with authority. "I saved you for a reason. I have a mission for you.” A mission? For me?? “A mission?” I asked, swallowing. Something about it just didn't sound right; it didn't. Maybe it was the way he said it, or the chilling look in his eyes as he said it. It all made me feel very unnerved. “A mission.” He repeated. “What mission is that? Is it something I can do? Something anyone can do? What exactly is it?”

She sends the picture to a number. "Mission in progress."

"Get out of this place! I don't want to repeat myself!" He slowly stood up and wiped away the blood on his mouth. He gave me this death stare and started walking away. "I will finish my mission whether you like it or not..." He said it quiet enough for me not to hear, but I did. What mission was he talking about?

Not now. “That’s why I accept missions like this,” I said quietly. “Dangerous ones. Missions that involve killing. It doesn’t matter how hard or risky they are. I just keep doing them because I want to prove something. I want them to see that I’m strong… that I’m reliable… that I’m someone they can be proud of.” I finally looked at Vince again. “And this mission,” I added softly, “I know this is something that will make them even more proud of me.”

“What are your plans after we get out here?” He seemed surprised by that, “My plans?” he chuckles softly, “I have never really thought about that, frankly. I’ve just been working hard to get into the medical team and be able to represent my new pack. I expected this mission to be the turning point for me at least, give me some sense of purpose,” his face became grim and he sighed, “I guess it wasn’t meant to be.” “You didn’t look beyond this mission?” I asked.
