Then, abruptly—the ground shifted beneath us. A tremor. A crack. “Move!” Kael shouted. But it was too late. The cave floor collapsed. I screamed as I plummeted, the world spinning into darkness. The Fall Pain exploded through me as I hit the ground hard, dust and debris raining down around me. My ears rang. My lungs burned. “Kael?” My voice was hoarse. Silence. I pushed myself up, my body aching. Total darkness. The lantern was gone. I wasn’t alone.

“This is her burden.” Cayla finally reached the lower ledge—a narrow strip of rock where she could stand, just a few meters above the cavern floor. From here, it looked deceptively easy. But as she stepped forward, the stone cracked beneath her feet. Time slowed. A groan echoed through the cave, and with a sickening lurch, the ledge collapsed. She screamed as she fell. She didn’t have time. The fall wasn’t far, but it was enough. Her back hit the rocks first, the impact jolting through her spine. Then the water embraced her.

It seemed the Flame Hounds knew of our presence here. We covered the thick forest floor and reached the site almost half a mile away from the main entrance to the cave. There were two lichen-covered rocky bluffs with a narrow trail in between them. The trap door was on the floor of the narrow trail. It was a treacherous place and we would have to exercise more caution here. A slip would mean we would fall into the enemy territory with broken bones. The trap door was large enough for the two of us to get in simultaneously.

The strange grey rocks held a golden hue to them, almost as if someone had painted them. The entrance was eerie, dark with a slither of bright green vines across the opening, like a thin line of curtain created by nature. "We're not going to explode when we walk in there, are we?" Betty's voice held humor but I could hear the slight tremor of worry in her voice. Theo chuckled lightly, "No, there is nothing to worry about."

Toby eases the pressure before letting go entirely, his hands falling to his knees in an attempt to catch his breath. Puffs of cold mist leave my mouth while I examine my work and check the sensors. “Well,” Toby remarks, chuckling. “Good thing the dean doesn’t know about this.” “He wouldn’t care. He hasn’t been down here in six years, and I doubt a tunnel collapsing would make a difference on that front. Who’d it fall on?” I ask, smoothing my gloves over the metal. Toby shrugs. “Some idiot engineering graduate student testing drills down in the ice core storage area.” He points down the incline into the darkness. “He’s fine. Spooked him, is all. He thought the whole tunnel was collapsing.”

The time went slow motion for me, it was already impossible to stop the fast plunging of the stalactite. The rock made a thumping sound on the stone floor echoing all throughout the dungeon. Silence fell for a moment, the goblins slowly looked up, and I stopped breathing.
