When she asked if I felt well enough for a walk into Ravenfell, I nearly jumped out of bed. Now, my legs ache from lack of use, but the cool fog brushing over my skin is exhilarating. I needed this, even if it jogs memories that maybe are better off left forgotten. “Pretty much smack dab in between Ravenfell and our closest neighboring village of Hidesmith.” She clicks her tongue, steering us to the left. “Hidesmith is a bit of a madhouse, honestly. From my vantage point on horseback beside Abby, I could feel it. Mana. Thick as iron in the air. The kind of pressure that made lesser mages faint, or at least step back. But Abby? She tilted her head like it was just an interesting breeze. Her red hair—damn that hair—whipped in the wind, crackling faintly at the ends with lightning she didn’t even notice anymore. We rode into the village, if it could be called that. It was no more than a handful of stone houses, thatched roofs slick with moisture, a single abandoned tavern, and a ruined watchtower half-swallowed by the woods. The villagers had evacuated days ago. Smart people.

“This village does not take kindly to strangers who don’t belong.” I swallowed hard, nodding mutely, as Lucy gently tugged me forward. The witch’s gaze remained fixed on us as we passed under the wooden archway that marked the entrance to the village. My heart pounded in my chest, every instinct urging me to turn back, but I knew there was no turning back now.

“Where’s Aria?” He frowned. “She said she was going to check on the healer and get more herbs for Matilda.” That was almost an hour ago. My wolf stirred uneasily inside me, pacing. Find her. “I’ll go look,” I said. Damien nodded, sensing my tension. “I’ll check the far end.” The village wasn’t large — a cluster of stone huts connected by winding tunnels and narrow bridges carved into the rock. Water ran through channels along the ground, glowing faintly from bioluminescent moss.

Then they started to walk. The village is quite huge. The walls were high and the lands stretched into shadows. There are myriad torches that burned around the village that looked like fireflies in the dark. Even at night, everyone were busy. Strange looking Badbloods were doing their work. Some flew with bird wings carrying baskets of root crops, some were strolling around looking ugly and exhausted, and some chattering and drinking a stinky looking liquid. They walk, passing through Badbloods into a wide and roofless stadium that stood at the center of the village. Loud noise was coming out from it making Mira's heart flutter.

Rosalie The rain had not stopped since returning from the Malificus Acus. It poured down like a wall of water. The village below the tower, had become a bog. The moat, flooded, and the even the distant stream had burst its banks… not that I could see it trough the gloom. Villagers had migrated into their little ram-shackle homes, and only came out when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, the streets and fields below were empty. Even the cows sheltered under the bushy trees looking for an escape from the impossible weather.

They seemed to have people of all sorts of statuses roaming through the village here. "This might be a good stay" I said to myself. My nose brought me to an open fire that was roasting several pigs, with small children playing around and their mothers sitting on logs, eating. Again, there was a few dusty signs plastered on some of the logs next to the children. "No witches!" It read. The smile on my face disappears again and I lower my head and walk over to the fire pit. I already had a cloaking spell to cloak the scent of my magic, but I was still feeling weary that they actually had to put warning signs up.

I let the conversation drop as we shift into our wolves for the rest of the run, we have a few days until we get to the temple but by the end of the day, we should make it to the next village if we keep moving. Our wolves have some fun splashing and playing in a pond we come across when we stop for a break, but we don’t stay long. The sky is darkening as soft lights illuminate the horizon, letting us know the village is near. We both part ways to scramble behind one of the few trees to shift back. I meet Finn and we head into the village. My eyes take in the clean cobblestone streets and the neat yet simple buildings and houses. But concern creeps in when I see no one out.
