I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean, but I was determined to find my place. On my first day of classes, I walked into Elemental Magic with a flutter of nerves. The classroom was spacious, with windows that opened to a stunning view of the grounds, and the air crackled with energy. The teacher, a tall woman with flowing hair the color of flames and eyes that shimmered like embers, introduced herself as Professor Pyra.

Paternal. "I see you've all gotten your magic cases, I'll leave now. And," his voice reduced to a conspirational whisper. "Just so you know, your next class is curses, and just like the subject, the warlock teaching it could be a bit curst as well." The witches expelled startled giggles. Sybil chuckled and left the class, the servants trailing behind him. Not long after he was gone, the next warlock strode in, carrying a bunch of tablets.

Her hair was lank and lusterless, falling around her like strings of rotting straw. A cauldron bubbled slowly in the corner, leaving off the most infernal and rancid vapors. Bits of frogs’ legs, bat wings and eyes of newt were scattered around the floor of the cave. Her lupine eyes, savage and cunning, only came to life when she muttered certain arcane words from a spell. They perched above her hawkish and hooked nose. From it sprang the most preposterous wart. It was at least the size of a saucer. It would have been funny if the scene wasn’t so Stoker-esque.

“By now you must all have noticed that we’re welcoming a new staff member here with us. From now on, he will be a part of your higher learning to hone your magic-wielding ability. Professor Kendrick.” He motioned his hand to point at the salt-and-pepper-haired man with rectangular-rimmed glasses, the one whom the girls from earlier were squealing at. Professor Kendrick smiled, showing a flash of brilliant white teeth. “He’ll be your Charms and Relics teacher. And all of you will be meeting him no matter which class you will belong to.”

I ignored it, setting my jaw and trying to focus on the task at hand. Professor Hawksley entered, her frail frame surprisingly commanding as she tapped her staff against the stone floor. “Good morning, class,” she squeaked, her voice carrying an edge of authority beneath the timid cadence. “Today, we will explore the intersection of magical theory and ancient leyline manipulation. Pay close attention—these concepts will form the foundation for your advanced studies.”
