Cassie trudged up the hill with her sisters, the massive packhouse looming before them. The three of them weren’t particularly tall, but they were strong. With thick auburn hair and hazel eyes. Their faces, arms and legs were largely covered in freckles. A gift from so many days spent out in the sun with the rest of the pack. The sun was fading now, as they walked through the main room and up the stairs to their families’ wing of the house. They shared a kind of suite, with three bedrooms branching off of a small sitting room. The large bathroom could accommodate all of them, but there always seemed to be a fight over its use.

You will not be given the right to treat me like trash anymore. I drove home and surprisingly my parents were not home yet. There were some signs that they had come over, maybe for a change of clothes and for food but there was no sign of them being around presently, I hurriedly went to my sister's room to check if she was there but she wasn't. Her room was the same way it was before she was taken to the hospital. I was used to being home alone but it didn't mean that I liked it.

I'd gotten some scholarships, but not near enough to cover everything. At the moment, I lived with Brooklyn. She didn't need a roommate but she also hated living alone. Brooklyn had three brothers, and they were all super protective of their younger sisters. Brooklyn's older sister, Meredith, the one that had just gotten married, had lived in the apartment Brooklyn currently lived in now.

I asked my friends, hoping one of them would say it was fake, but their silence was all I needed to know it wasn’t fake. I couldn’t breathe, every breath I forced myself to take made my chest tighten more. I could hear everyone’s voice but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. “Inaya,” Hayes held my hands, “Look at us, don’t think of anything.” I didn’t know how I should react, should I be happy that my sister was safe and sound or should I be pissed that my sister was on a podcast spewing nonsense. “Why is she acting that way?” I heard one of our classmates say,

Immediately after the attack, I went to a nearby store with surveillance cameras and copied everything. Surprisingly, Jessica was not completely stupid. The footage only showed me being dragged away by her group at the school gates, along with images of her appearing near the abandoned building. Nonetheless, even that was enough to paint the whole picture. Richard was stunned. He could not believe someone could be cruel enough to have their own sister kidnapped and beaten like this. His words hit my chest like a physical blow. But if a family has no love or respect left, can it still be called famiglia? My mind drifted uncontrollably to my late sister, Seraphina. I knew that Seraphina and Horton had been considered a perfect match since childhood. They shared the same cold intelligence, the same hunger for power. Susie takes me to her other spare bedroom and I thank her for letting me stay at her place for a few days until I find a nice apartment for myself. Susie left me alone to settle in and once I was alone and in the privacy of my room, I can't help but recall how everything was now over between Michael and I. Michael would return to my sister, the person he should have never left. Even though I love Michael and want to see him happy, I know I won't be able to bear it if he and my sister reconciled and chose to be together once again. And I can't help but feel like the worst sister in the world for thinking such because I know that Seraphina wouldn't think the same way.

"You don't have to sign. But think about your best friend. She's staying at the McKinzie nursing home, remember?" Lynn Dole—my first real friend in this world. A year ago, she'd rented an apartment full of toxic chemicals without knowing it. Now she had leukemia. We hadn't found a matching donor for her yet. The nursing home was the only thing keeping her alive. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be, Jennifer." His voice was soft. The threat underneath it wasn't. It is all suburban sprawl; block after block of single-family homes punctuated by strip malls and the occasional apartment complex. My older sisters both lived at home and attended the local community college. They worked part-time jobs and attended college part time as well. Neither of them seemed to be in a big hurry to move on with their lives. That was fine by me—I love my big sisters. What they didn't know is that I have enjoyed fantasizing about them for years.

Probably because only darkness greeted me home. The place was empty, quiet and dark before I arrived. I texted them that I’d come home and though they didn’t reply, there was a sliver of hope that they’re here waiting for me. Ever since I can remember, I was always left alone. Because of my heart, I couldn’t go with them. They travel a lot because of their work. My sisters, Serene, Sage and Sky, are always with my parents. They help them with their work. They started out young ever since they were able. I was the only one who can’t– always cooped in my room unable to indulge myself even with a simple task.
