If that wasn’t enough, reaching the place at all took a ten-hour drive up the fire roads from Big Bear Lake, followed by a brutal hike in by pack trail. Her piece of the park for the summer came with a big dose of welcome peace and quiet, plus million-dollar views. Hannah got up each morning to a panoramic, ringside seat looking out over mountains and forests, and a hundred-plus miles of pure visibility.

Not sure if she’s joking because everyone knows what Peak point is. It’s a well-known tourist spot, and the city spends thousands to promote it monthly. We even did an ad commercial up there for OLO. “Up the mountain.” I try again and get the same blank expression. “We don’t have any mountains on this island.”

Because sometimes, the only way to find clarity in confusion is to confront it head-on. As I stood at the edge of town, gazing up at the imposing Hollow Peak looming over it, I couldn’t help but marvel at how breathtakingly beautiful it was. The mountain, with its jagged peaks and snow-capped summit, looked like a giant diamond sparkling in the sunlight. And the town at its foot, nestled in the valley, was equally enchanting, with its charming houses and cozy streets.
