AS I STEPPED INTO the hallway, the pitch-black paint nearly left me in the dark, but I was used to it and soon enough my eyes adjusted to the lighting. Curved into the walls were vines decorated with spikes. The carvings are as pitch black as the wall itself, so anyone who got too close to the wall would be sliced open by the spikes. I wasn't looking at the spikes, though, but at the things hanging from them. Thousands of little objects hung from the spikes: necklaces, bracelets, watches, etc. I took every piece from a corpse the Nightmare Master forced me to massacre.

The smaller one gathered up the lighter things. I made a note of the plate number out of habit, and then unfolded the flyer and stared at it as they drove off. It was a cheap-looking photocopy covered with what looked like ads for horror movies that had been torn out of a newspaper, with hand drawn pictures of skulls and bats filling all the other blank spaces. She grimaced and slightly shook my arm. "You're with me, right? So why should I be afraid?" I had no choice but to come with her. She smiled at me whenever we heard someone was shouting inside that horror house. As we entered a tiny darkroom, I was walking behind Astrid and warned anyone who was trying to scare her.
