“Thank you, John.” I thought for a moment on how close they had come to dying. “John, I am so sorry for what happened.”
“Mr. Steel, it wasn’t your fault.” There was a pause at the other end, then he continued, “If you don’t mind my saying so, I knew what I signed up for when I took the job long ago.” Yes, he did. I was up front with him from the beginning, before he had agreed to take the job. John had promised never to tell anyone about my being a vampire, and he had stayed true to his word, not even telling Margarite. Looking back, I guess I should have told Margarite, as well, but I didn’t think it was necessary at the time.
