The air smelled of earth and rain and something older, older than anything she could comprehend.
After what felt like hours but could have been minutes, the path opened into a massive clearing, the center dominated by an ancient tree. Its trunk was wide as a small house, roots twisted like serpents across the forest floor, leaves so dark they seemed to drink the light. The air vibrated with energy, and Aria could feel it in every nerve, every muscle, every heartbeat.
“This is it,” Damon whispered, awe and caution in his voice. “The heart of the forest.”
