I rolled my eyes, "Your book is fine, Case." "No, it's not. Look at this crease! You did that!" She wailed out, pointing to one of the corners of her book cover. I squinted, trying to see what she was referring to but still couldn't see any. I finally gave up after a few seconds. "You should be grateful I haven't burned your book collection for taking up so much space in this house." I muttered under my breath as I dusted myself off. I swear I've never seen someone's head turn so fast in my life. It was like those horror movie scenes where the possessed person turns their head in an unnatural speed to a super creepy angle that causes their hair behind your neck to rise.

Then I saw a faint glow, seeping through the crack of an old wooden shelf. My pulse quickened. I reached out, fingers trembling, and pulled the door open slowly. The creak was deafening. “Please don’t let him hear that,” I murmured. Inside it was the Living Book. Relief flooded me. I reached out, fingers grazing its worn leather cover, when I froze. I heard heavy footsteps, drawing closer. No. No, no, not now… I cursed silently and slipped the book back into its place, and closed the shelf careful not to let it slam. Then I moved quickly, darting behind the large black curtain at the edge of the room, pressing myself into the stone wall behind it.

What does it mean? I closed the book as I felt my head throb. Damn! My head hurts just thinking about all this. I sighed heavily and looked down at the book I'm holding but my heart pounded loudly as I felt the cold sweat dripping on my forehead. The cover of the book...at first you won't notice it. I didn't notice it the first time I saw the book but when looking at it closely you will notice...something in the lower part of the book cover. "Flip the pages...look down at the numbers...find my secrets..." I read the small words written on the book cover. Each word is so imperceptible that I was surprised that there were even words on the book cover.

The more I stared, the less sense they made and my eyes felt heavy from just looking at them. I tried tilting my head to the side, as if that would somehow help me read them, but it didn’t. With a sigh, I decided to stop wasting time and just open the book. Maybe the inside would make more sense.

I guess the one who made this knit it for strong attachment.” The general runs his fingers on the edge of the book as he flips every page creating an air that brushes his face.

The book rested under a glass case similar to the one that housed it at the university. Luca donned sterile gloves and began to prepare the opening. Seeing that the spine of the large volume was in fair condition he cautiously applied a leather conditioner to the cover. For its rudimentary previous care, the cover was in remarkable condition. The group held its collective breath as he parted the book slightly.

Dusty and dark, the size of a coffin, edges bound in metal bands etched with tiny words too small to read. It rose until it sat fully above the sea of paper, long and heavy and unmistakably coffin‑shaped. Except where a coffin would have a lid, this had a cover. Like a book. A book so big it could only have been made to bury someone in. The “cover” creaked, splitting along its spine. The top half lifted a few inches, then a few more pages and paper sliding off it in small avalanches until, with a reluctant crack, it fell open.
