I returned a favoring smile to her by doing it genuinely before I took the book on her soft palm, an almost thick book with a blue cover. The book is heavy. On the front cover, there is a closed eye with long black thick lashes in a form of feathers placed inside a pentagon. Outside the badge has a wonderful abstract ocean and sunrise. I didn’t look at the book’s text. Something in my mind shrank back from the notion. Inwardly I cringed at the idea that I might’ve read anything from that damn yellow book at all . . . Maybe it’s a different book; maybe it’s a novel I checked out from the library, or . . . I reached out, hand trembling, and with a finger—as if afraid of touching some deadly waste—flicked the book shut with a fingertip. The cover filled me with a creeping, ice-cold dread.

The carving of roses with minimalist style on the cover looks real. Tiara’s never seen a book cover like this before. She tried to open the book, but it couldn’t open.
