She thought that had there been leaves growing and buds blooming, she might have been able to hear them, too.
Her sense of smell had grown sharpest of all. Each tree exuded a scent that was slightly different from its neighbors, even when they were the same species. She smelled the rotting leaves that dotted the forest floor far below and the slightly damp earth beneath them, too. Even more amazingly, she could smell every living creature for what seemed like miles. While they all carried their own distinct scent, an overriding feature of the smell was the same for each of them, be it a squirrel, a bird or a raccoon. Somehow, she knew she was smelling the blood flowing through their veins. M
