She sat alone on a small wooden bench and rested a tiny sketchbook on her knees. A scruffy stray cat wandered through the iron bars and stopped right near the toes of her shoes. I watched her lean forward to study the animal with an intense level of focus. She did not reach out to pet the cat or try to scare it away. She simply analyzed the creature for several long seconds before picking up a dark pencil. She dragged the pencil across the paper with quick strokes to capture the cat on the page. A sharp ache blossomed in my chest because I recognized that exact serious demeanor.
