MOON OF ASHES
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Mara’s bowstring creaked taut. “What did you do?”
Ava clutched the mask, her eyes wide and glowing. “It’s not bound anymore,” she whispered.
Behind her, the murals began to move.
At first it was only a ripple, like heat rising off stone. The painted wolves on the cavern walls shimmered, colours bleeding into motion. Then claws shifted against the rock, eyes lit up like coals, and the low chorus Ava had been hearing swelled into a full, rolling howl.
