Voices rose and fell and cups clinked, spoons stirred and people laughed.
And then I saw her.
Lila.
She sat by the window, where the sun fell on her hair, and made it shine. She looked perfect, too perfect. She smiled wide the moment her eyes caught mine.
She stood fast, her arms spread. “Alina!” she said, loud, so that every person turned to see. She hugged me tight, like she missed me all her life.
My body stiffened and her perfume filled my nose. Her lips pressed near my ear and her voice was soft, sharp, and cruel. “Relax. Smile for them. Or I will cut your smile myself.”
