He gave pieces of answers that only led to more questions.
“The food will last us the distance to the way station, but fresh meat would be even better. Will Tete catch food for us also?”
“He always shares.”
That answer prompted another thought. “How do you prepare it?”
Hunter frowned for a moment, sifting the word, searching for understanding. “I eat it as it is brought to me, fresh, not as my mother used to ready food. But I do not eat meat a lot. I mostly eat greens, and roots, and berries from the earth. Tete finds my fare . . . ” Hunter hesitated, his smooth brow furrowing, lips thinning in what Poe took to be humor, before continuing, “amusing.”
