“You’re the storm. You break things that need breaking.” Her words slammed into my chest. I wasn’t the goddess’s shadow. I wasn’t her mistake. I wasn’t her weapon gone rogue. I was the one thing she couldn’t control. I lifted my chin, locking my gaze with the water-goddess towering before us. My storm rose in a spiral around me, responding not to fear but to purpose. “Get out of my head,” I growled. The lightning inside me ignited into a second pulse, stronger than anything I’d ever felt. It surged upward, blasting into the sky and striking the waves with a violent shudder.

The neighborhood lay in ruins, with rubble and dust drifting in the air. I furrowed my brows, my OCD pushing me to walk away. Just then, a hunched, filthy woman came in my way. She was wrapped in a filthy down jacket, its original color long buried beneath layers of grime. She clutched a handful of empty plastic bottles, her eyes vacant and glassy. “M-Ms. Bray?” She spoke, her voice raspy and scratchy. I stopped in my tracks and looked at her from a distance. It took a while for me to scan her bloated and wrinkly face before I recognized her to be the once arrogant Little Miss Sunshine.

From this woman. The one who had been through the fire. The one who had found herself in it. The one who had written herself down. The one who had put her name on it. The one who was standing at the kitchen window in June morning light in the ordinary extraordinary life that was hers, completely and finally and without apology, hers. The one who had stayed. Not because she had to. Because she had chosen to. Every day. In every place. As herself. She pressed send. Set the phone on the table.

Because the world didn’t know it yet—but the woman beside me wasn’t just a survivor. She was the storm. And now, she had everything to fight for.

All the furniture in this place - the bed, the chair, the side table, and even the medicine tray - were all standardized human designs. Nothing was hovering, there were no drones, and they were using plastic! Clearly, this isn’t Atlantis. “Byron.” I whispered. “Skyr? Trei?” I started to yell out.
