I needed to resolve this quickly before anyone else noticed my slip-up. With a deep breath, I marched back to the counter, determined to regain some semblance of dignity. “Can you try it again?” I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended. “Maybe it was just a glitch.” The clerk hesitated but then nodded, her fingers hovering over the machine. She swiped my card again, but the same denial message flashed on the screen. “Sorry, Cara,” she said gently, but her tone had a hint of pity that only fueled my anger. “It’s still coming up as declined. Are you sure you have the funds available?”

“Teagan, please!” “NO. You have said all you need to say, but know this as of right now. I am no longer part of the mafia or the cartel. I give it up.
