I could hear my heart racing after saying the words I'd kept to myself since learning that I was about to die. I thought I could be unaffected by my imminent death, yet I suddenly wanted to see more of the world. Gary didn't say anything. It was so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. Just as I thought he wasn't going to say anything, he finally spoke. His words made my heart descend into an abyss, though.

The wolf inside me tried to tense, to claw its way back up, but there wasn’t enough anger left to fuel it. He’d died for nothing. That was the truth. I stood, or tried to. My legs barely held, but the arms holding me were still locked around me, holding me up like a fence post. The rest of the people in the room hovered on the edge of vision, but it didn’t matter. I faced the bed, the shape of the sheet, and said it out loud: “He had died for nothing…” The words hit the tile and just stayed there, unfixable, echoing back at me from every blank wall in the house. * * *

It felt just like—death. Meanwhile, my family waited anxiously. Seeing the doctor return, they quickly donned their helmets without hesitation. Somewhere beyond my dying breaths, the machine's cold melody wrenched the last light of my mind back into memories.

Nothing I did was enough, my promises to him were ruthlessly crushed, and I was left with nothing. I could hear voices around me from time to time, but my brain didn't want to know anything.
