Lisa's POV I slammed the heavy book shut, my fingers tingling from the weight of flipping through so many pages. My eyes burned, not just from staring at ink for too long, but from the fire of triumph rushing through me. I had done it. I had read all of them—the very same books Enzo had marked, the ones he had teased me about, the ones he said would never hold my interest for long. Every word was carved into my mind like scratches on stone.

But I liked that; unpredictable. "You can?" "Well,” he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, “--it isn't always accurate, but I read some books about it in the temple." "You read?" I asked. He lifted an eyebrow and I regretted what I said almost immediately. It came out like I was insulting him. And I swear I didn’t mean it that way. I was just… surprised. After capitalism has collapsed, not a lot of people read anymore. Unless you are a maester or nurse, reading is not a necessary life skill, farming and hunting are. Reading is more like an escape.

My steps took a very slow pace as my finger rode through those books as though I was checking for my favorite book. Just like she sneaked out of my embrace, she also cowered out of my sight as soon as the free period started. Ever since I have been stalking her. I couldn't believe I stalk her until I got stuck in this murky place where I hate to stay the most. The smell of books was too toxic and unpleasant to me. I wonder why students found these dense books lodge a pleasant place fit to stay. I loathe myself for coming here and detest it more that I couldn't leave here just as I wanted.

You deserve it. You know, I hated the idea of reading books. It felt boring and static. Well guess who is a book worm now. I still am on the ones you brought 6 months ago. I know you would have mouthed the words, slow reader. I agree I am slow but I feel I have to be, because I am a new reader. You know, I can liken reading a book to having a wizard’s broom. While reading, I have travelled to different places and felt a rush of different emotions. Books are magical. I now see what makes you stick your nose in them all the time.

He scoffs. "Excuse me? I pretty much started reading all kinds of books when I was three. I've known better!" She spat. "I don't have to be in love to experience and know how it works. Books make me feel those feelings whenever I want to, Mr.-I-have-Never-pursued-a-woman." Even if she can barely feel anything. Books still help her. Jin looks at the pile of books she has on the side of her bed. The boxes of appliances he had brought her are still untouched but that wasn't what caught his attention.

is stamped across the cover. I feel a stab of frustration at myself. Why don’t I read more business books? This is where my life has gone wrong. I haven’t put enough effort into my career. I flip through, trying to absorb the information as quickly as I can. There are lots of diagrams with arrows traveling one way, then flipping over and going the opposite way. Clearly the message is: reverse the arrow. Well, I got that in about two seconds. I must be a natural.

“You did? Did you like reading though?” “Calm down,” I coerced. “When I said read books, I wasn't talking about the girly types you all get. Not the romance, horror, thriller, or fantasy stuff. I'm talking about Pack books. I was made to read books that talked about leadership as an Alpha.” She pouted. “That sucks.” “Not exactly,” I said. She frowned. “Then crack a smile when you talk about it. You look depressed.” “It's like a kind of torture,” he said. “And I don't like reading. I mean, who likes doing what they're forced to? Growing up, I had to lead by example. It was hard at a young age but I had to do it.”

*SARAH'S POV I was so happy that someone was ready to invest in me. An investment that should have happened long before then. My father was just a wicked man who did not deem it fit to invest in my education. I remained in the study till evening as I was engrossed in the book I was reading. With the use of the internet, I easily assimilated the contents of the book and I was done in no time. A book that contained over one hundred and fifty pages. Not a novel but an educational textbook.
