Reyna nodded, though she still felt her mother was hiding something. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, Adam had just emerged from a shop in the distance. His gaze once again fell upon Nora and her two children. For some reason, his feet seemed to want to follow them, whilst his mind was filled with a single question that continued to trouble him. Who exactly was that woman? Adam wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings until a hand wrapped itself around his waist. Adam was about to brush the hand away, but a voice that sounded so familiar reached his ears.

This was Adam’s territory. Adam hadn't been a "King" or a "Don." He had been the man who held the umbrella over Enzo’s grandfather’s head during funerals, and the man who had taught Enzo how to clean a Beretta when he was twelve. He was seventy now, with skin like cracked leather and a set of eyes that had seen enough blood to drown the city. To the FBI, he was a retired dockworker with a bad hip. To us, he was the only bridge back to the living. "You look like shit, kid," Adam grunted. He didn't hug Enzo. He didn't weep. He just stood in the doorway of his kitchen, holding a heavy iron skillet, looking at the "ghost" of the man he’d helped raise.

"Ensure Adam reaches home safely." The guard nodded. "Ma'am." Adam entered the awaiting vehicle. Adeline leaned in. "Tomorrow, I'll tell you stories," she whispered. Adam beamed. As the car pulled away, Adeline waved. Adam mirrored her gesture through the window. Smiles lingered. The vehicle disappeared into the night, leaving Adeline staring down the empty road. Her heart swollen. Adam's brief visit brought joy. "Tomorrow," she whispered. The darkness softened. Stars twinkled like promises. The mess back at the warehouse was left for the other guys to handle. As he headed to the apartment, Adam started reflecting on his relationship with Sabrina. He’d met her at one of his nightclubs. The way she carried herself, with an apparent innocence and naivety, stood out in the chaos and cruelty of the world he lived in, making her instantly intriguing. Besides nightclubs, Adam owned hotels and restaurants, most of them fronts for laundering money from his illicit dealings.

Cliques had been established already and I couldn't break in . At first, the other kids weren't always mean . They didn't call me names . They didn't bully me . It was a whole three page essay mixed with lots of emotions but the other kids considered it nonsense . While the teacher read my essay to the class they laughed out loud pointing fingers at me .

He sobered then cleared his throat. I smiled. “He was shocked.” It was difficult to believe that Adam was related to Tristan. There was a slight resemblance. Adam came a bit closer and leaned against one of the posts. “I wasn’t sure what kind of books you like, so I brought a memoir, a thriller, a romance, and a fantasy book. We don’t have many new books. I don’t think I’m allowed to give you my kindle. You could use it for other stuff.” I smiled. “It’s okay.” Despite my intention to hate on every Russo, it was difficult not to like Adam. “I think I’ll pass on the thriller, though. I’ve had plenty of thrill in my life recently.”

Now, they were all just part of the same unit moving into enemy territory, awaiting the opportunity to do their part to make the world a better place. But for Adam, that included running back into the place he’d run out of not long ago. It wouldn’t be easy to see that place again, to stand in the Insemination Wing and smell the smells that were ingrained in his brain, to see those white walls and the awful chairs. No, he wasn’t looking forward to that at all.

Ina's Pov I woke up the next morning feeling surprisingly rested. As I opened my eyes, I saw Adam beside me, looking much better than the previous night. A wave of anxiety washed over me, wondering if he would bring up the events from the party. However, to my surprise, his first question was about my hunger. I nodded, still cautious but intrigued by his sudden change in demeanor. Adam clapped his hands, summoning a group of girls who entered carrying a lavish breakfast buffet. He explained that he wasn't sure of my food preferences, so he ordered a variety of dishes. His thoughtful gesture touched my heart, and I ate with gratitude, enjoying the delicious spread.
