Stephanie was still unbothered. Her breaths were coming out in small pants and she could see her breath already fogging. She couldn’t feel some parts of her body anymore. What she was doing didn’t seem to be working. “Do you have a brain at all?” she asked. “You’ll know that ice isn’t destructive. You won’t be able to defeat someone who uses ice with ice. Did you think you could actually freeze me?” she asked pressing her forearm harder and the cold got worse. She could feel the cold much stronger now and the ice crawling up her body at a much faster rate. Miranda woke up with a terrible hangover. She rolled to the other side of her bed and found Nick sleeping soundly next to her. Miranda jumped out of bed screaming. “Yeah. Coming.” As I step off the ice, I glance toward the entrance of the rink, the same one she used to walk through after school, clutching her skates to her chest like they were made of glass. I needed him to say it back to me, needed the words out of his mouth so I could believe they were real, so I could believe that whatever had happened between us in that bar, in his bed, in the hours before the sun came up, could actually stay contained in the box I'd built for it, the same box I was already failing to keep shut. Because if he said it back, if he actually agreed, then maybe I could convince myself this was manageable. Maybe I could survive an entire season standing this close to him on the ice without doing something incredibly stupid.

Alex squinted her eyes at him as he smiled and then she yelled when he suddenly turned her body to face him completely too. Before she knew what was happening, he removed the ice from his mouth and grabbed her knees. Pulling them open, he rubbed the ice against her legs, and then he threw it back in his mouth. She gasped when his cold mouth kissed her neck, making her squirm in her seat. She was even more shocked when his mouth captured a bite of her flesh in his mouth. “Stop it, Gabe! No...” she protested but stopped when the delicious feeling of the ice soothed the burning feeling she had.
