If I Were A King Novels & Stories

In our own weird and strange way we are a family, and families stick together. Nothing within me wants to be their siren princess. I'm sure that's the only reason they want me. The king didn't appear to have any heirs when I visited him. Perhaps he has named me his successor. That is a role I don't want if it were ever offered to me. Imagine me being the princess of a foreign kingdom under the water. I wouldn't know the rules or culture down there. That's it I am grabbing my keys.

"I decided if I can't have a King for a son, I'll just have a world without any Kings at all." He pressed the button.

Chapter 23 - Enough Garren The job of a King was to ensure that his people felt self and protected all while keeping order. It was a gruelling task, one I wouldn't wish upon my greatest enemy. The hours were long, and the days were tiresome. I didn't want to be back here sitting on my throne in front of my people so soon. Not when I had planned to have one more day of solitude with Penelope. But all of that was shattered the moment Zeke stepped through the portal and destroyed any shred of hope I had at having one last night lost in the possibility of what life with Penelope could be like.

"I announced this today to give everyone, as well as myself, an explanation. "I admit that I like men, but I don't think it's outrageous. Everyone is different when it comes to love. Even though I don't conform to what everyone does, I've never hurt anyone. I'm willing to tell you the truth today, accept your criticism, and face my truth… "Also, I'd like to tell you that if I become the new king, I won't marry a queen. I'm different from regular people. It's only natural that I can't hurt a normal lady."

Once again, I glanced at my people and I knew the answer. “A king is a servant of its people.” Claps and praises echoed in the hall. They weren’t expecting that answer from me. The world referred King as ruler. In my opinion, the ruling meant controlling and showing dominance. I wasn’t that kind of king nor did I want to be. King is the one who serves, not rule. Growing up, I was told that true king nurtures, protects and defends its people. That was exactly what I wanted to be. A true king.

she held his eyes. “I am,” he rose to his feet and crossed to rest his palms on the handrail and gaze out over the water. He sighed, and returned to the chair, picking up the wine and taking a sip. “I became king too young,” he told her quietly. “Before I had lived for myself. Alyra is right, being a monarch means that a person ceases to exist in their own right. Their decisions are no longer for themselves, their choices no longer prioritize their needs but that of the people they are responsible for.”

I try to hide my shaking as I face the group. "I won't lie to you," I start, my voice clear. "I am new to all of this. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm just a kid. But, I'm also a King, or I was, once. Maybe I'll be that person again, or maybe not." I'm rambling, so I pause to collect my thoughts.

Not something I would have ever expected to share with the king. I don’t hate it. In fact, I’m alarmed how much I do enjoy it, working in tandem with a man I care about, as if class wasn’t something that fundamentally separated us in almost every other regard. It makes me curious about things that probably don’t matter… Yet they still feel vitally important here, in the quiet of the kitchen, with only the crack sizzle of the wood in the stove to pull me from my thoughts. “If you weren’t a king,” I ask, “What would you want to be?”

"OH, my prince. We were wondering where you went, come on, have something to eat." I went and took a seat on my chair that was next to the one my father used to sit on. I lowered my head for dramatic effect. "My prince, take heart. All will be well. The king taught you well. You will be alright." That's what I wanted. I lifted my head, "Elders, there is not time to waste, the kingdom cannot be without a king, not now. The fairy King is still out there and will be coming for revenge." I sighed shaking my head.

So this is our plan to prevent that from happening. See, I should probably mention that my parents are the King and Queen of Atlesper, a hidden, secluded kingdom that homes the majority of our species. That would make me the Prince. I love being Prince and I look forward to becoming King. I love my kingdom and my people. Some people expect me to resent this life being forced upon me, but I see it as an honour and a privilege. I was born with the chance to make life better for those around me. Very few are granted that opportunity, I just happened to be born with it, so like hell am I letting it go to waste.
