Maya’s POV The roar of the enormous black wolf sent the snow piled on top of the pine trees crashing down all at once, covering us in a white curtain. I remained pressed against the tree trunk, my breath caught in my throat and my eyes fixed on the scene before me. In less than two seconds, the massive beast pinned Hunter’s tracker to the frozen ground. A sickening, dry crack of breaking bones echoed through the clearing, followed by an agonized groan. Once she was a wolf Clara stood on all fours. The other wolf blocked her exit. He started snarling at her, lunging forward. She moved out of the way each time, but he was forcing her backwards. Realizing she would have to go through him, Clara hurled herself forward. She caught him off-guard, but not enough to knock him down. She felt his teeth sink into her back and she let out a yelp. He clamped down hard and shook his head back and forth grinding his teeth in the process.

And then, in a slow-motion watch, the big bad wolf bares its teeth and bites down on my dad’s neck, blood spewing from its jaws, my throat clamping, unable to look away as my dad is murdered in front of me.
