When Delia and the children are gone and the rest of the pack is chained to the trees, Gray and Bo take Iselyn and I a little farther out than the rest. “You’ll be okay,” Gray tells me, as he locks the thick metal clamp around my neck. I only nod in response. Much harder than I hope too.

Swear it.” Caya pulled Nero aside afterward. “Monsters? Sounds like bullshit to scare drunks. Still, the underground fits.” As dusk fell, they regrouped and slipped toward the largest mine entrance under cover of shadows. The air grew cooler, heavier with coal dust. Nero’s chains were removed for the climb; he moved like a predator now, muscles coiled.

The movement of a light breeze brushes my skin. "Turn off the light," I whisper to Orchid. She does, and immediately we are drenched in darkness. But as our eyes begin to adjust, it becomes apparent that the darkness is not total. There is a cold, silvery light ahead. We are close to the exit. The mine shaft is almost impossible to see from the outside, as it is well hidden behind a jumble of large boulders and some stunted plants, so that the opening appears to be little more than a shadow on the rocks.

"Once the guards investigate, we slip inside." Nathanial agreed, and I carefully picked up a few stones, tossing them into the distance. The clatter of rocks striking together echoed through the night, drawing the guards' attention. They moved away from the entrance, their curiosity piqued. "Now," Nathanial whispered urgently, and we dashed toward the mine shaft, slipping inside just as the guards turned back. The interior of the mine was cold and damp, the air thick with the scent of earth and decay. We moved cautiously, the narrow passages twisting and turning in a labyrinthine maze. The faint sound of whimpers and chains guided us deeper, until we finally reached a large chamber.

So I knew that they were in there. I mind linked my warriors to bring the men of the town to the mine shaft. As soon as they arrived I looked at the mine shaft and then at the human men. “Start digging.” I said. “We will never get through there before night time.” One of them said. “Yes you will. Otherwise one of you might have a really bad accident in the night time. And there won’t be any witnesses because I don’t see any street lights or any kind of lighting out here.” I said.

Damon’s golden armor was hot to the touch, and Runa was carefully peeling away the scorched leather of her gloves. In the center of the mine-cavern, the four children were gathered. Lyra and Caelum were sitting on the floor, their violet and emerald lights casting long, shimmering shadows.
