The old mine sat like a scar in the valley, nature half-heartedly trying to swallow up the wreckage, but honestly, losing the fight. Rusted machines, busted buildings, weeds poking through cracked stone. It made for decent cover, especially before dawn, when the world’s still kind of sleepy and shadows do half the work for you. Lyra crouched behind a pile of slag, her senses dialed up to eleven, picking up the jittery, confused emotions of the guards. Most of them just wanted to go home, not exactly evil, just scared stiff and doing what they were told.
