Heriberto's voice rumbled from the walls themselves, "that I wouldn't notice someone touching my diary?"
The exit tunnel collapsed. Rocks fell, sealing us in.
"Run!" I shouted. "The other way! Deeper! To the emergency shaft!"
We scrambled toward the secondary tunnel David had marked. As we ran, the walls began to bleed. Black ooze seeped from the rock, forming into shapes. Shadows peeled themselves off the floor, reaching for our ankles.
"He's waking the mine," Mathias yelled, shoving a shadow-beast away.
We sprinted into the dark, the prize in hand, but the trap snapping shut behind us.
