CHAPTER SIX : THE FIRST DEATH Lyra woke up cold. Not regular cold. Not the kind of cold that came from winter weather or a lack of blankets. The kind of cold that came from lying on frozen ground with no pack bond to keep you warm. The kind of cold that sank into bones and stayed there. The kind of cold that could kill. " It seemed like they were digging for dirt on me, but when they came up empty, they just grabbed some junk metal to make a quick buck. That was what I figured. They were hunting for something to hold over my head, and it cost them their lives? That thought lingered in my mind. I had to see the scene for myself. All for a few dollars, for that stubborn pride, to end up dead in that grimy corner. I could not help but wonder if it was really worth it.

He always does. His hand brushes mine, a silent question. “I’m okay,” I whisper. “It’s just… reacting.” “Good,” he mutters. “If the tunnels are afraid of you, we’re doing something right.”

I hate myself too" His voice is a whisper, and for a moment, I close my eyes and picture myself on that shitty worn-out mattress, hungry and weak, with no one in the world. It felt like being in a big, dark, and empty hole with no hope of coming out. Even when you come out, you have no idea where to go. You are completely alone. That place was illegal, I just know that.
