The edges were scorched, but the ink was still bright, written in deep crimson that shimmered like blood in firelight. Her eyes scanned the first line—and her breath stilled. “Kai,” she whispered. “Look.” He leaned closer. My body was filled with a wonderful lightness, and I felt like I could just float to the stars if I wanted. The box was filled with books, loads of books. And not just any ones— April Dove’s books. I picked up the one staring right at him. The already large grin on my face broadened as I stared at the pink, white, and red book cover and the name written in bold, sparkling pink font. ‘Our Hearts Are Always One, book two of the Pink Hearts and Sunshine series.’ The one I had asked Liam to give me. I picked up the book that was beside it, The Sunshine Is In Your Smile, the third book in the series.

I walked to the library and sat next to the window, I looked at my project and now I need to find some books. I walked through the bookshelfs and search for the architect section. I'm looking for a watertank and some electric placement book. I looked through every book clearly and oh there it is. I tried to reach it but I can't. It's on the top of the bookshelf, I need to take a ladder. I walked away to grab the ladder. I got back to the architect section again and I put the ladder to reach the book but the book is gone. Suddenly I found the book on the middle shelf, I looked around. I guess someone must have been taking it and put it there.

We suddenly heard a faint heartbeat echoing from deep within the ground. The elders looked at me with widened eyes. "What's that? I have never seen a thing like this before. It's getting scary. How can we suddenly hear a heartbeat in this hall like something buried long ago has awakened." Elder Isolde finally spoke since the incident began to happen. Elowen has gone totally silent, unlike her. Does she know what's happening, or is she just as shocked as the rest of us? I guess she is. The large circular stone slab engraved with ancient runes, that was embedded in the center of the hall, glowed with an ocean-blue light before turning gold. No! Something needs to be done.

I had no choice but to grip the pen and write his name on paper. Standing by my side, he leaned in to take a closer look, and his warm breath brushed against my ear. My hand trembled slightly, so the letters came out crooked. "That's not right." Oliver suddenly grabbed my hand, and his large, warm palm completely enveloped mine. "The letter 'O' goes like this." He guided my hand across the paper, letter by letter, with his chest nearly pressed against my back. I could feel his clear, steady heartbeat. The air was filled with his clean, woody scent mixed with the faint smell of old books and ink.

Cass waited until the deadbolt clicked behind her before she set the envelope on her coffee table. The apartment was quiet—too quiet. Even the city’s usual hum seemed muffled through the rain streaking her windows. She sat, letting her fingers hover over the silver-inked initials. Whoever had sent this hadn’t just known her name—they’d known her real one. Not the polished, harmless Cass Blake everyone met in daylight. The flap opened without resistance. Inside was a single sheet of matte black paper, the message printed in faint grey type, like a whisper in ink:

In that quiet moment, it would have been so easy to forget the crown, the bloodlines, the prophecy. To let her heart claim what it desired. But then she saw Darian’s scarred hands, Isolde’s exhausted eyes, Cyrion’s haunted silence. She saw every soldier broken at Black Hollow. And she pulled her hand back. “My heart cannot be mine to give,” she said, her voice cracking. “It belongs to them. To the kingdom. That is the chain I wear.”
