Disrespectful, even. As soon as we pulled up to the clinic, Riley flung the door open and dashed up the steps in pursuit of a promised lollipop. I turned to him. “Listen, about the money—” His expression changed instantly, darkening like a storm. I could practically hear his molars grinding, almost like he wanted to devour me. I swallowed dryly, feeling my heart stutter in my chest. Before I could finish apologizing, Riley tripped over a step. “Riley!” I screamed, lunging forward.

The city outside was glowing in the distance, but inside this room, everything felt cold and heavy. I knew then that something inside Riley had shifted for good. This wasn’t just about losing Ethan anymore. This was about losing herself, and quietly deciding she didn’t care to find that same version again.

Jealousy at that moment was a powerful testament, even no one in the room that he considered a threat,when someone touches what’s his, his emotions turns into a putrid rage. He had his walls down and he was letting me know he wasn’t happy with his decision. He might have decided to meet his mother because of me. And although it was originally my plan to use myself as bait, I felt guilty for doing it now.

It was a slow torture that left her voice no choice but to be heard. “Aren’t you curious what I look like, when I’m trying to get into your deepest crevices?... Won’t you open your eyes?” Slowly, fearfully, she did. She was not asleep; this was really happening. “Riley loved you. More than you probably realized. He told me you were the only one who ever saw through him.” His fingers danced to her pants, relieving the zipper for space. His thumb slid in, brushing a soft knob that made her shiver.

My fingers mechanically stroke her hair, trying to offer some scant comfort in a situation so desperately devoid of it. "Shh," I murmur softly, tightening my arms around her. My emotions are a raging torrent, a mix of fury, mistrust, and, surprisingly, a modicum of empathy. I think of Jayden and Kayden and how the magnetic pull toward them has sometimes made me consider actions out of my character. "Calm down, Riley." She pulls back slightly, sniffling as her eyes—swollen and red—meet mine. "Can you ever forgive me? I was so selfish, letting my emotions guide me, endangering you and... and—"

"They'll see through it in an hour. Jax is there, Riley. He’s the captain of the defense. He hates me. He spends every single game trying to get under my skin, trying to find a weakness to exploit. He'll see your face, he'll see your eyes, and he'll know." Riley turned. She let the scissors hang by her side and looked her twin full in the face. With the hair gone, falling in messy clumps around her ears, the resemblance was terrifying. They had the same sharp jawline, the same slightly tilted nose, the same amber flecks in their irises. "Let him look," she said. "You're crazy. This isn't a movie. You’re going to get caught, and Mom is going to lose her mind."

She looks at me a long moment before nodding and walking out of my office. ~~~ Riley POV I’ll be damned if I let my brother ruin this for Quinn. That man is strung so tight that he’s made my best friend doubt herself and I’m done sitting by and watching it. As soon as I leave Quinn’s office, I head straight to Emerson’s. I knock and don’t wait for a response before barging in. He’s in a meeting with Clint. “Riley, is everything okay?” my mate asks, jumping up.

But God, I also want her to pin me against these lockers and— The locker room door swings open with a loud creak. Two teammates walk in, laughing about something on their phones. Riley jerks back like she’s been electrocuted. Her cheeks are flushed dark red. She grabs her bag from the bench, shoots me one last venomous look, and storms out without another word. I slump against the lockers, legs shaking, pussy soaked and aching, mind reeling. What the hell is happening between us? And why does it feel like the real fight hasn’t even started yet?
