As if reading my mind, she adds, “The remaining pages of the story are in the pack safe. Meet me tomorrow morning then. There should be a solution to this pandemic.” You know those nights when you search for sleep but it’s nowhere around? Tonight feels like that. I don’t know if it’s insomnia or fear, but I spend nearly an hour tossing and turning in my bed. No pillow feels fluffy enough, the comforters keep slipping off, it’s too cold… you name it. My eyes, like they have a mind of their own, refuse to shut as if if they do something bad would happen, and a combo of all the unpleasantness pushes me closer to a nervous breakdown.

“Calvin, good morning.” Calvin looked furious. “Are those the books you like?” Adriana widened her watery eyes. “What’s wrong? Are they no good?” Calvin frowned, his mood foul. “I didn’t sleep at all last night.” In the past, insomnia was just insomnia. But last night, he’d read those sad, meaningless poems and essays, leaving his mind cluttered with random thoughts. He hadn’t been this sentimental even in his teenage years—and now he felt like he was regressing.

But recently, the Insomnia he suffered has hit him again.

He feared Rachel would try to sleep with him if he did, which was his worst nightmare. Stephen pulled out several reports, choosing to spend the night in his office rather than going home. Looking at the densely packed words on the report, Stephen felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, and his eyelids were heavy. Slumping onto his desk, Stephen slowly fell asleep. … “Knock, knock.” The sound of knocking startled Stephen awake. He raised his head, glancing at the door while fighting off his sleepiness. “Who’s there? Come in. The door is unlocked.”

I’d picked up a few new Stephen King novels last month at the used book sale at Bassler Memorial Library, so I figured on starting one of them. So I was surprised to find myself sitting up in my chair, blinking as if coming out of a long sleep, with The Way open in my lap, reading about “invoking the spirit of Ah-Tzenul through the nourishment of the sow’s blood.” I sat there and stared at The Way, wondering how the hell I’d gone and read it when I’d wanted to read something else. Also, how could I sit there for a whole hour and a half reading without remembering what I’d read!

The plan backfires, unfortunately, and I get a little too cozy. So cozy that my eyes start to drift shut bit by bit, my exhaustion from yesterday catching up with my sleepness night, which combines with the fascinating but difficult information in the book. Eventually I stop fighting it, letting my eyes close and my head drift back onto my pillow, promising myself…just a moment to rest my eyes… Aaaand I fall in to a deep, consuming, dreamless snooze that lasts way, way longer than five minutes. The next thing I know, something is gently drawing a line down my cheek…
