"Start the camera." Fidel turned on the recording equipment. The red light blinked on. Daniel's face appeared on the monitor chained and pale but with a stubborn set to his jaw. "For the record," I said to the camera, "this is Daniel Vanguard former CEO of Vanguard Weaponry. He has refused to confess to his crimes. What happens next is his choice." I walked over to Daniel with the knife. He watched me approach but didn't flinch. Didn't beg. Just kept that same defiant expression.

I asked, curiousity sparkling in my eyes brighter than the stars in the night sky. "My bedroom." Daniel said, his tone serious. "It's the safest place for us right now." As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. And, just then a funny question struck my mind. "I lost blood. But, you didn't lose control to drink it from my hand. What kind of vampire are you?" My question made Daniel throw his head back and laugh as we walked through the gardens to reach his place. "A vampire with good self control. You really think I would drink your blood when we are in a life and death situation?"

Red walked to the table and sat on the chair in front of it hitting Daniel with her stench. "What the fuck?!" He wiggled his nose, "What is that smell?" "It's probably me." She shrugged, "I didn't have my bath this morning." "You what?! Are you mad or something?" He asked appalled by her odour. "Look, interview me let me get out of here." She looked straight into his eyes, "And for the record, when I ace this interview and get this job. I would make sure the boss fires you." And her last statement sent Daniel howling with laughter.

I said, stating the facts. She shook her head and eventually signaled for me to go ahead. “Oh, I already asked one. I saw a dining hall, so I got curious about whether vampires eat human food or not. Does it taste good? And can your bodies even digest it?” I rambled excitedly, trying to stay seated on the bed instead of running off to find a pen and paper. I loved information. Learning stuff without the pressure of an exam was one of the things I actually enjoyed.

“Answer it. Say nothing that confirms you’ve spoken to anyone. End it fast.” He looked at her. Then he answered. “Victor.” His voice shifted into the register she knew from their marriage, pleasant and managed, giving nothing away. “I was going to call you later.” She could not hear the other side. Something Viper noticed he did a lot. His statement, however, was another that confused Viper. The older man clearly was not on fire, and he did not seem to be in pain. Viper could neither smell nor see smoke. He finally decided that it was a human colloquialism that he did not understand and let it go.
