I know I’ll feel better once that water hits my skin. Carefully, we undressed and piled our dirty clothes in a heap. I grabbed a piece of soap and stepped into the cold water trying not to squawk from the frigid temperature. “It’s really cold Conor.” I warned, watching him step into the water up to his mid-thigh and then plunge below the surface. He resurfaced a few seconds later with an awkward grunting noise.

Not hard enough to damage anything. Just to hear something solid. The sound bounced off the buildings and came back empty.

I plunged into the icy depths, gasping as the freezing water wrapped around me like a vise. The shock was instant, the cold cutting through my body like broken glass. I fought against it, pushing deeper into the darkness, praying I would find him. The darkness swirled around me, blinding and confusing, but I focused on one thing: I had to save him.
