BOUND TO THE CRIPPLED CEO
Ivan pretended to be amused; I pretended to believe her version of events.
At one point, Valerie ran off to chase butterflies, and I caught Ivan watching her with an expression so soft it almost startled me.
“She’s happy,” I said quietly, passing him a bottle of water.
He nodded, his eyes still on her. “She deserves to be.”
There was something in his voice. Pride, maybe, or guilt but before I could ask, Valerie squealed, “Dad, Mummy, look! A butterfly likes me!”
She stood frozen, one tiny hand out as a white butterfly danced near her fingertips. Ivan got up, walked over, and crouched beside her. “You must have magic blood in you,” he said.
