“it’ll work… it has to” Just then her phone rang, it was her assistant telling us the jet was ready to go. “Alright Arian, let’s go fix your pack problems, then I have to come be a CEO” She said, and shut her laptop down.

Instead, she turned to him and exclaimed, "Liam, you shouldn't have acted so rashly just now! Although I have no idea who this Gabriel guy is, I heard them mention that he works for Mr. Jacka! Mr. Jacka is not someone we want to get in trouble with!" Celena had heard of Mr. Jacka's name before. He was the Mafia boss in Drunham City, second to only Eaden! I also saw her now when I was arriving here," Jack said, the look of hurt in his eyes as Waylon settled across from his desk and looked at him in pity.

I need to save Jasper Steele. On the surface, it seems like a simple farewell, but I'm missing something. Maybe I need to be a Steele to understand. Standing I call out into the lab for my assistant Jack. I show him the video and he winces, right before his eyes widen in fear. "What are we going to tell Mr. and Mrs. Steele?" We're both silent for a while. "The good news, I guess." Jack looks skeptical. "You've got to be kidding me. What good news?"

I asked. “For the standard test, minutes. For the deep panel, an hour.” She labeled the vial without looking at me. “Talk to me while we wait. This Jake. What do you actually know about him?” “He’s… he was at the club. He’s from the capital, I think. He said work brings him out this way.” I closed my eyes and tried to gather the pieces of a man out of one night. “He’s older than me. He has money — the hotel was… it was the kind of place I’ve only cleaned, never slept in. He asked if I was sure. Every time, he asked if I was sure.”

I approach the counter, my hands shaking as I fill out the forms the teller gives me. Name: Tara Jackson. Account number: I write it from memory, the numbers still burned into my brain even after three years. The teller, a woman in her thirties with perfectly styled hair and a professional smile, types something into her computer. Her smile falters, her face goes strange. "Is something wrong?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Because I’m good at my job.” I held her gaze. “Who is he.” She didn’t miss the shift. I wasn’t asking if. I was asking who. “Roger Teller,” she said. The name hit a file in my head immediately. Not because I’d met him. Because Elias had mentioned it once, months ago, in the context of “humans we don’t worry about.” I kept my face neutral. “And he’s discreet?” “He’s discreet,” Jordan confirmed. “He’s licensed. He’s careful. And he works with me on half my cases. Which means he trusts my judgment and he won’t freelance.”

A heavy, calloused fist collided with Calista’s frame, slamming her onto the wooden chair. A sharp groan escaped her lips as she collapsed forward. Standing above her, her father, Jake, watched with a twisted smirk as blood welled from her wounds. “I love hurting you, do you know that?” he murmured, his voice dripping with malice. “It satisfies me, gives me chills, reminds me of just how much strength I still have left in my system, even at my age.”

It would be reported before nightfall that I had been left at the altar. Suddenly the double doors of the cathedral jerked open. I jerked my head toward them, a scrap of hope clinging to my chest. The moment I saw who it was, that hope shattered. Tyler Stallion. Jake’s father. Founder of Stallion Holdings. A gorgeous man with a clean shave, blonde-dyed hair, and matching blonde-dyed brows. Looking very fresh and very expensive in his mid-sixties.
