Then, outta nowhere, she smiles.
It’s small, a little crooked, and barely there before it twists into a wince.
She lets out this soft, broken laugh that scrapes right across my heart.
“Damn,” she says, her voice rough but trying to sound light, “I never knew it would hurt to smile with a broken face.”
I don’t even realize I’m holding my breath until she moves her hand, waving her fingers around her face like she’s trying to play it off.
“Jake,” she says, her eyes locking onto mine, “I hope I still look as appealing to you as I do normally, even with a little bit of these decorations.”
